Walkin' After Midnight

In Memphis. And well worth it. My rule is that if you can justify your sleepless nights, bloodshot eyes, and constant haze, then it doesn't matter how tired you are. And this was another justifiable weekend.

After working all day on Friday after Dance Party USA, I managed to squeeze in a power nap and rolled into Memphis around 1a. Went out for drinks with Mark and then ended up at a random Rasta house party. We were only there for a short time and I still managed to spill my beer all over the floor. But it was Budweiser so it was okay. (I know, beggars can't be choosers.)

Saturday I was a tourist for a minute and went to Stax Records with Amanda, the Juke Box Widow. Very cool...a part of music history that I didn't know much about. Later that afternoon we spent sitting on her 1920's bungalow porch sipping on beers, listening to great tunes, chillin' with the homies. Good times, I tell you. I mean, who sits on porches and just chills these days? 'Twas fab.

Had dinner at The Deli with Amanda and Jennifer and then caught a couple of rock bands, Augustine and The Glass. In my opinion, Augustine blew The Glass off the stage, yet they were the openers. Go figure. Once Mark joined us it wasn't long before we headed over to Dish for more drinks. From there the girls bailed and Mark and I headed to the afterparty at one of the Augustine dude's houses. By that time I was a bit buzzed so I don't have details. (Lucky you.) I do remember LCD Soundsystem was on when we got there and I listened to some cuts off the new Stephen Malkmus, which sounded pretty hip. Oh, there was a swing bench thing in the middle of the yard that kept on making me laugh. Don't ask.

I don't know what time we headed home, but it was laaaate. But it doesn't stop there. There was still time left for some Jedi training on DJing, except that my memories of what I learned are a bit foggy. Scheisse. Maybe if I'm lucky I'll get a recap next time.

If we could just incorporate some of downtown Memphis' nightlife into Nashville's, I think all would be better here.

    And their restaurants.

Bottom line - Nashville really needs to give downtown a refurbishing and NOT by adding loft apartments people our age can't afford.

Two things would have to happen to bring that to Nashville's downtown:

-Closing off Second Avenue to traffic at night.

-Changing the laws to allow open container alcohol on the street.

    Probably won't happen though.

Totally. Nash used to have a really cool underground scene up until about five or so years ago. Now everywhere you go it's hoochie-mama land and you can't tell any of the girls (or guys, for that matter) apart.

We should open up a cool venue.
