Dempsey-fied
You haven't seen true Rockabilly until you've seen The Dempseys. Based out of Memphis, these guys have rock[abillied] my world time and time again. They have been playing across the country for several years, played house band at Elvis Presley's Memphis, and recently starred as Elvis's band in the new Johnny Cash movie, Walk The Line, alongside Joaquin Pheonix and Reese Witherspoon. I've seen them play at a few different venues on Beale Street in Memphis and at a casino in Tunica, but luckily for us Nashvillians, their best shows can be seen at Rippy's, right on the corner of 5th and Broadway.
And that's exactly where I was Friday night, celebrating Em's last weekend as a singleton. (Sidenote: Next week, we will be related, as she is marrying my cousin Chris, who I set her up with - thank ya, thank ya very much.) At any rate, it was a classic Demps night, boogie shoes and all. Between Brad's suggestive hip gyrations, Joe's keen humor, Ron's classic nonchalantness, and the constant flow of Miller High Lifes, it was another Dance Party USA night. Jammin' to cover tunes and originals alike, these guys do it all. Check out their brand new CD, Radio Friendly Hits For Your DJ To Play.
An added bonus, Brad was sweet enough to introduce me to his buddy David Fontana, DJ Fontana's son. David can be seen around Nashville as drummer for an Elvis impersonator. (Awwww...like father, like son.) I'll have more details for you on their next show...August 13th at the Gibson in Opry Mills.
The night was topped off with a little personal flavour, when the boys played us our fave, Burnin' Love. Thanks guys - we know it doesn't quite fit your mojo! Just know you made two pretty girls smile. And Ron got to be John Bonham for a minute. So it was worth it.
The only thing that could've made the night better was some Pink Paisley action with a touch of wah. I know, a girl can't have everything.

Don't forget the shiny pants along with the Pink Paisley.
Did you have to give Brad a note to get the 'Burnin' Love' love? Glad you guys had a good time!

Oh crap! I forgot to mention the shiny pants, which were in full force. A new shiny black pair, actually. I've already quizzed him on the make, size, and the place of purchase.
There you go, birthday present idea for me. Along with the Groove Purse.

Loved it!!! It was an amazing show, even more amazing that we made it home and through the rest of the weekend alive. Hee hee!! What better band can you get than one that can flow from "White Lightnin'" to "Purple Haze" with no effort at all. Which would explain the crowd, quarter cowboy hats, quarter Hot Topic lovers and the rest cool people like us.
