It's About Time

I'm not usually a Nashville Scene reader, and much to the dismay of certain local nightlife bloggers, I prefer All the Rage for my weekly dose of Nashville. However, a friendly co-worker and avid SSW reader has now started hand-delivering the Scene directly to my office. And I couldn't help but notice the enticing cover story in this week's issue related to Nashville's ever-changing rock scene. Well said, Tracy.

It's been a roller coaster over the past ten to twelve years. Back to the days of the old Blue Sky Court, the cute and poppy For Kate's Sake, and my beloved 328 Performance Hall that the city decided to heartlessly tear down just a few years ago, the Nashville rock scene has definitely had it's ups and downs. During the 2000's, up until this year I think it's safe to say that rock music in this town was virtually non-existent. In it's absence, I was turned on to some serious rockabilly and some kickin' country, so at least something good came out of it.

The year 2005 hit, and all of a sudden there's so many good shows that I can't keep track. Not only do we have my fave local rockers like The Features, Be Your Own Pet, Fluid Ounces, The Pink Spiders and my new obsession De Novo Dahl (not to mention the lower-key-but-just-as-good-folk-rockers, Newton Dominey and Duncan May), we also have been graced with the presence of some hard to come by (when in Nashville) shows like The Black Keys, The Mosquitos and The Raveonettes.

At any rate, things have been looking up and evidently Tracy thinks so, too. So get out there and support the bands, though I don't think they'll be disappearing any time soon this time around.

I'm not near as well educated as you on the current rock scene, but there are a few names in that pile I may have to venture out to see.

328 is sadly missed. It was the best place to see an eclectic mix of artists and the size and layout guaranteed you wouldn't feel your eardrums for a week. The Tracy Chapman show there was the best ever. Other 328 favorites of mine were Jewel, Big Head Todd, and Chanting Buddhist Monks. Whoda thunkit?

Hey, the music listings and what's going on around town stuff in ATR isn't bad.

It's the actual articles that kill me. Two of their music/scene writers, Jason Moon Wilkins and Jonathan Flax, are really good. Just writing for the wrong folks, I guess.

Hey, are the Dempseys playing anywhere in town this weekend?

The Pink Spiders just got signed to a label didn't they? Awesome.

I heart Be Your Own Pet. That girl ROCKS.

The Dempseys are playing at Rippy's Friday and Saturday night at 10:30. Their set goes till about 2a. I'm sitting this one out since I'll be at Shack Shakers tomorrow night. Demps will be back July 8th and 9th...and you can bet I'll be there.

But Mr. Roboto, you can't see them this weekend...I wanted to take you to see them first! ;)

You know, you can check NashvilleZine for blog-style informing and hilarious hipster bitching every day.

Whoops. I meant to explain that NashvilleZine's bitching and informing is related to the Nashville rock scene. My bad.

Tonight seems like a sort of slow night--at least for my music tastes--so don't be mad if go down there. I promise to pretend to have never seen them before when we go. Deal?

NashZine is a good resource if you share the *exact same tastes* as the writers. I read it all the time, and it strikes me that, if they don't like it, then it doesn't exist.

On one hand, it's cool that they aren't waivering from their own very specific tastes and trying to be "all inclusive" about the music scene coverage. But, on the other, you'd miss alot of music in Nashville reading NZ exclusively.

Which is why you should read SSW, as well. I don't write about music every day, but I always update on my personal faves and shows and such. Again, my own tastes, but hey, this is my site, therefore my tastes.
