Your Voicemail. Listen To It.
A couple months ago I went off about the two kinds of people that I hate. Passive and selfish. I did not, however, continue on about what bad habits bothered me the most.
Unfortunately, I don't have the time to rattle off all irritating habits. But I can tell you the number one thing I hate is when you leave someone a voicemail and they call you back without checking it. Because 200% of the time, they're going to ask you questions that you already gave them the answers to within the body of the message. Ultimately, they're trying to save themselves their precious time, but in the process, they're doubling up on your own precious time. (This would fall under the selfish category listed above, if you want to get technical.) Not to mention that it's just plain rude. Is this how you handle your business, as well?
At any rate, if you know me, some of my messages can be quite lengthy. But, I've cut down tremendously*. These days, if you get a long message, it's only because I'm telling you what I needed to tell you because I will either A) forget by the time you call me back or B) won't have time to tell you when you call me back.
So next time I call you and leave you a message, listen to it before you call me back. Chances are, you'll get the information you need and will save even more time. Otherwise, I am going to be pissy when you start asking me those already answered questions and won't want to talk to you anyway. So save me the stress and save yourself the time. Mmk?
*Exceptions are: Ciaobella, Julie, Jag. Those mentioned may get a long rambling email if and only if the following conditions exist: A) I am drunk. B) I am tired. C) I am having a nervous breakdown. But even so, there will still be an important message in there somewhere.

Typical drunk voice mail from Jill:
Jill: This is going to be long, but you have to listen to it all, because there will be a keyword at the end so I can make sure you listened to it.
(insert body of message)
Jill:Keyword is Jedi Training
Next day:
Me: (ring ring! Jill answers) Yoda!
Jill: Wha? (racks brain) Oh right, the keyword.
Most effective method yet.

note to self:
don't admit to jill that i didn't listen to her voicemail before calling her back.

seriously though...this is bwe's biggest gripe about me and the phone. my thought is, i've got caller id. i know you called. i'm gonna call you back anyway. you're gonna repeat, probably verbatim, what you said in the voicemail whether i listen or not. so why bother? it's faster to just call you back.
i know. i'm wrong. whatev.

I'm with you, Newton. I do the same thing.
Besides, usually to listen to the message someone just left me, I have to sit through the 10 prior to that that I haven't heard yet. So often it's faster to just call back.

Mark this day down in history as the second time Newt and I have agreed. Jill, I have told you over and over again to not leave long messages b/c I don't listen to them. Why waste minutes listening to you blab on when you are going to say the same thing when I call you back. I tell my mother to not leave me messages unless it is extremely important but I continually get more blah blah blah messages from her. I delete them as soon as they start.
I don't think I have to worry about listening to your long messages anyway, right?

Communication is very underrated. Businesses are failing (or are making their employees lives hell) strictly from a lack of communication. At least I'm on it.
