Whisky River Took His Mind

Saturday night brought amazing food, surprises and an exceptional amount of alcohol. Jack Daniels to be specific.

It was the night of my guy's surprise birthday party. After changing the plans a million times (he's a hard kid to keep up with...this won't be happening again) he still had no idea. It wasn't the BBQ, birthday cake, and balloons all-American shindig that I had originally envisioned, but it was quite the time.

I started out by treating him to dinner at one of our new faves, Cafe des Artistes, a French Bistro. Located just off of Sunset, this indoor/outdoor restaurant features an all French cuisine along with some of the best desserts that one might possibly have. He had filet mignon served with au gratin potatoes and I opted for the more carbs plate, linguine with garlic and tomatoes drenched in olive oil. Extra-virgin, of course. Brioche pudding was our dessert of choice...a bread pudding topped with melted carmel. I believe the word orgasmic was uttered more than once.

In the meantime, my guy's RazR phone was being texted off the hook by this guy. He "invited" us to Three Clubs, a low key, vintage Hollywood bar so that he wouldn't have to drink alone. Bad day, he said. (This was our tricky little way to get him to his party...even though I had no idea on the details of the situation.)

So we show up and the door guy tells us we can't go in because it's closed for a private party. I gave the guy one of my "you're kidding me" glares, as this isn't one of those places. After mentioning to him that our friend was already inside he reluctantly let us in. The place was fairly empty (which wasn't abnormal seeing as it was just before 10p) and Zach was on the corner of the bar drinking a Bud looking as lonely as ever. He passed out a birthday shot to the birthday boy and they did their little clinky toast thing that they do. Nice work.

At this point I was a bit confused seeing as I didn't see any of our friends and duder really was by himself so I didn't know what the hell was going on. Then, right on cue, the entire back booth (practically a room it's so huge) jumped up and yelled their surprises. It was so dimly lit Jared just squinted, stunned, and looked back there wondering whose party he was at. (Mind you, his birthday was really two weeks ago but he had been out of town for business.) After a long pause, we all sang Happy (belated) Birthday and exchanged gifts.

That's when the drinks began to flow.

Shot after shot, whiskey after whiskey, the tunes rang out on the jukebox. From Johnny Cash to The Clash, and Franz Ferdinand to Willie Nelson it was a night to remember. Good thing I was in my right mind that night because the boyfriend had a bit of a foggy memory that I had to refresh the next day. I had never seen him so...intoxicated, shall we say? Poor guy. The wee hours did not bring good things, as we had to leave his party before the guests so that he could regroup. After that, I played nurse. And yet another successful party under my belt.

Now...on to the planning for my birthday...one week from today.
