Memorial Day Wasteland

I like to refer to Memorial Day Weekend as a weekend to remember. Particularly because it's a holiday weekend, a three day weekend, a weekend to get down and dirty and forget that we have respectable jobs that we need to be responsible for.

Usually my holidays are spent traveling or entertaining guests. Now, I love either one of those past times...but a girl needs some down time. Last year I had my favorite Memphis couple in town, the year before that I was dodging cheese cubes and running from cops and riding in disco party cabs. This year it was time for a change. Time to add a little relaxation to the mix.
Or not.

It all began when we hopped in the car on Friday evening after work and cruised on over to Joshua Tree. Mind you it was a two and a half hour cruise, but nonetheless, it was for a good cause. We arrived at Pappy & Harriet's around 9:30p. Just in time for the band, Giant Bear, to play their last song. So we were a little late, but that didn't stop us. I decided to lay off the cosmos for a while and do this classic roadhouse style...it was Stella time. We met up with an old buddy from my Memphis days and partied the night away. The next thing I knew, we were leaving an old ranch housed by these people at 2a. It was a Long. Drive. Home. I'll leave it at that.

Saturday was a day of recovery...but not for long. After a nice Mexican (really) late lunch, we packed up a sort of picnic - wine, cheese & crackers, fresh berries - and made our way to the Hollywood Forever Cemetary to see the night's screening of Hitchcock's Vertigo. We had a nice little group going and over 2,000 people showed up for this week's movie. Hard to believe that a mere two years ago there were only a couple hundred. After three bottles of wine we schlepped it back to my place and passed out. And I was already dreading what the next day would bring for my aching liver and sleep deprivation.

Sunday...a house party in Malibu. Over the mountains and by the coast we drove...up the PCH to a little secluded neighborhood overlooking the ocean. There was a BBQ, a pool, a hot tub, a fireplace, rum, doritos, lots of people and more rum. Fun times were had by all, to say the least. That was another long drive home, but then again, I wouldn't know because I was passed out in the passenger seat the entire hour and a half jaunt. Thank goodness I have a wonderful, responsible when (not) drinking and driving.

That brings us to Monday. Memorial Day. No work. Sleep in. I didn't want to do anything but sleep. And sleep some more. Eating is always a good idea, though, but I wanted only one thing: Chipotle. My new obsession. Now, there's not one close to home (but alas, this has not been a "close to home" kind of weekend) so we headed for Pasadena. Conveniently, my favorite H&M is in Pasadena and my gift certificate was burning a hole in my pocket. So I took care of that, dove into some luscious carnitas and chicken tacos, and then headed to my second favorite place, Walmart, to get some grocery shopping done. Tell me, is that a perfect way to end the long weekend or what?

So much for low key weekend. But damn, it sure was fun.
